parks & recreation

The Cohanzick Zoo is New Jersey's first zoo, a division of the Department of Recreation and Public Affairs founded in 1934. The Cohansey River peacefully flows through the park adding a unique natural setting. Open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, it is a great place to visit all year 'round.

The Manumuskin River - More than 3500 acres, Manumuskin River Preserve is the largest Conservancy preserve in New Jersey. This preserve was established to protect the globally rare plant, sensitive joint-vetch, Aeschymnome virginica. The population of sensitive joint-vetch along the Manumuskin River is the largest, healthiest stand in the world. The preserve also hosts other rare plants, animals, and plant communities mainly due to the pristine water quality and undisturbed nature of the area. Fifteen of New Jersey's threatened and endangered species of birds breed in the Manumuskin River Basin.

The Maurice River and its tributaries, the Menantico, Manumuskin, and the Muskee, flow through five southern New Jersey municipalities, four of which are located in rural Cumberland County. As small creeks the narrow freshwater tributaries, overhung with trees, meander through Vineland and Buena Vista Township; by the time they reach Millville, Maurice River Township, and Commercial Township their size has increased, and they are navigable by motorboat. The Maurice itself widens to become Union Lake at Millville and from there it winds through south Millville and, flanked by low salt marsh, divides Commercial and Maurice River Townships on its trip to the Delaware Bay.
